Welcome to your first COVID lesson class! Today lesson is Immune System 101 – the things you should’ve learned in high school but likely forgot (or never listened to).
I’ll be your cheery, whiskey drinking high school teacher with an edge, Mr. Morrow.
Let’s look at what the immune system is and why you need to know this shit to have an intelligent conversation about it.
The Defensive Position
Let’s start with the guiding question, do viruses make you sick?
Let’s discover the answer together, shall we?
Alright, I like using analogies. Since most of you that listen to my pods are likely military barbarians like myself, I’m going to make things simple for you. Rather than just speak about all the different immune cells and how they interact with your body, I’m going to use the analogy of your immune system like a defensive position (sorry, all you non Army types are probably not gonna follow but I digress)…
Our “defensive position” is our immune system and the enemy it’s defending against are the PATHOGENS (viruses, bacteria etc). The Pathogenians (like the Russians but sneakier) are constantly trying to invade and take over your entire battle space. Your INNATE IMMUNE SYSTEM or your defensive line is able to handle the basic stuff that gets thrown at it. The ACQUIRED IMMUNE SYSTEM is the int shop back at HQ with all the historical data of how you fought off all the other attacks. The WHITE BLOOD CELLS are like your recce company that is floating out way ahead of your position radioing back the size of the incoming pathogen force. From there you may end up calling in some ANTIBODIES that acts like lazing a specific target for destruction. Lastly, you’ve got T CELLS, the special forces operators that bring specific destruction to the annoying pathogen.

Immune System & COVID19
We’ve gotten to the point where the entire planet has turned into overnight immunologists and can deliver “expert” opinions without the slightest bit of due diligence or research. Part of the reason why I’m doing this series is not only to help prevent you from getting seriously ill or dying but to also prevent the death of critical thought.
If you don’t know the basics, that makes forming an opinion very difficult. Well, at least making an INFORMED opinion.
There are two studies that I’d like to highlight that support the hypothesis (there are more btw) that a strong immune system is your best bet at preventing hospitalization or even death from COVID19. They are:
- Physical exercise as a tool to fight against SARS CoV2 infection
- Obesity, inflammation and the immune system
Some other noteworthy research to read:
- Massachusetts breakthrough case study
- Case fatality rates of Sars CoV 2 based on age along with every other bit of real time data with rational, unbiased context can be found here.
In conclusion, get your ass moving and aggressively get your body fat down by establishing better nutrition habits so that your BMI is under 25. This is the only way out of this mess from the looks of things. You heard it here first.
