What Is Metabolic Disease?

This is a great question and one I don’t many have ever asked or would even know to ask.

This needs to change because it frames our health in more definable, measurable terms and I’m glad the good doctor was able to lay it out in no uncertain terms

Metabolic disease can be defined as exhibiting any of the following 4 factors:

  1. Having a waistline greater than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women;
  2. Blood pressure higher than 130/85 mmHg
  3. Fasting blood glucose greater than 100mg/dl
  4. HDL greater than 40 mg/dl for men, 50 mg/dl for women and triglyceride level above 150mg/dl

According to Dr. Ovadia a study published in the journal, Metabolic Syndrome and Related Disorders, 88% of American adults failed at least one of these criteria above. HOLY SHIT!

Why is this so shocking and scary?

How about that 3 out of the top 5 causes of death in North America (coronary heart disease, cancer and diabetes) can be causally linked to poor metabolic health.

The 12 Myths

In his new book, scheduled for release on 11 Nov 2021, Dr. Ovadia list 12 Myths that plague our health care system and render you fatter, sicker and more miserable every year. These myths are perpetrated by a system that is self-supporting, according to Dr. O.  In no order of precedence they are:

  1. Only obese people are metabolically unhealthy;
  2. The food pyramid is good for you;
  3. The food pyramid is based on good science;
  4. The people who produce our food want us to be healthy;
  5. Low-carb diets are bad for your heart;
  6. High cholesterol causes heart disease;
  7. Medications are the bet treatment for medical issues;
  8. Diets work if you follow them;
  9. Trying to lose weight by restricting calories always works;
  10. The best way to burn calories is exercise;
  11. You can’t improve metabolic health conditions without medication;
  12. Health problems come with age

Alright, this big beautiful list of myths is no before you. What do you think? Do you have any gut reactions to some or maybe all? Why?

I know that if I saw this list 15 years ago, I’d have said take this hippie garbage out of my face and go throw a Frisbee…

If, you have a burning desire, like I do, to find out more details about these myths – then you should definitely pick up a copy of Dr. Ovadia’s new book, “Stay Off My Operating Table.

Where To Go From Here…

If you’re introduced to this information for the first time, it may be hard to accept. Believe it or not, we have been conditioned to have an almost religious belief around food and nutrition. If I told you that some months I don’t eat for 72hrs or that I regularly skip breakfast and I consume as much animal fat that I can; what is your gut reaction?

This is what I and Dr. Ovadia are trying to challenge. You don’t have to do what we do, but ask yourself this question…Is my health optimal right now?

If the answer is no, it’s time to start looking at figuring out why and opening up your realm of possibilities that are outside of your doctor’s office and what you see on the news.

I would strongly recommend you have a read of a great article by Keenan Eriksson on the dangers of highly processed seed oils in our diet by heading HERE.

OR

Maybe you have a burning desire to hop on the fasting bandwagon. I highly encourage it AND to make it a bit easier on you, have a read of our ULTIMATE FASTING GUIDE.
